Citymeals Celebrates Passover

Passover traditions revolve around food, with each part of the meal symbolizing part of the Passover story. And while many will gather around the seder table with friends and family this Saturday to celebrate, many older New Yorkers will be alone. Once again, Citymeals is bringing the celebration right to their door, delivering Passover boxes to 3,000 of our recipients across the city.

Each holiday box includes eight Kosher for Passover meals and traditional holiday staples such as matzo, macaroons and grape juice. On the menu is salmon filet with lemon dill sauce, matzo farfel and beets; baked fish with tomatoes and herbs, mashed potatoes and zucchini and unstuffed cabbage with carrots.

Citymeals has delivered meals for Passover for over 20 years. It’s a way to ensure that our older Jewish recipients, those who are homebound and have nowhere to go, can still observe the holiday. One of those recipients is 81-year-old Elaine, who finds it difficult to leave her apartment on the Lower East Side, where she’s lived for the past 60 years.

“I have problems with my back. It hurts,” she tells NBC New York. “Meals on wheels makes my life easier.” She’s only able to continue living on her own thanks to the home-delivered meals she receives from Citymeals. “It’s healthy,” she says. “They deliver it to the door. They talk to me, and they’re very good companions.”

As food prices continue to rise, the delivery of these special holiday meals is especially appreciated. “This Passover box is amazing,” says Caryn, another recipient. “It’s all just wonderful! To those who made this happen, bless you and your staff for your caring and generosity.”
